Global Leadership Summit – 2019 – Day 1

Global Leadership Summit – 2019 – Day 1

The Global Leadership Summit has been an annual event on my calendar since 2011. This is the 25th year of the Summit. Each year it is a high quality, fully engaging, enriching and challenging event. It is two days of actionable content from world-class leaders from all walks of life. Here is a rundown of Day 1 of the 2019 GLS.

Craig Groeschel: Leaders are constantly doing a cost-benefit analysis. We assume that investing more brings a better return. However, over time more does not always mean better. Groeschel offers two strategies to be more productive. Fist, GETMO (Good Enough To Move On). Look for the greatest level of return based on time, money, and resources available. The idea of “perfect” can motivate us, but it can limit our ability to execute. Second, BTC (Bend The Curve). Look for ways that will exponentially raise quality while not adding cost. To do this, start by thinking inside the box. Lean into the constraints you have. They may lead you to be creative in finding a solution.

Bozoma Saint John: Your organization’s culture does not begin in the company handbook. It begins with you. Be your authentic, vulnerable self and that allows for others to be authentic and vulnerable. Diversity is like being invited to the party (that’s the easy part). Inclusion is being asked to dance. Get out there and ask people to dance.

Ben Sherwood: How to lead in a Crisis. Be unconventional. Creativity can overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. Maintain your point of reference in a crisis. You will be overwhelmed if you lose track of where you are and where you are trying to go. Practice Realistic Optimism. Be realistic, but hold onto faith and hope.

Liz Bohannon: Pluck defined: Spirited and determined courage. A leader who approaches challenges with curiosity and humility can learn and grow. The stages of learning should be viewed as a cycle instead of a static steps that are completed once. Give yourself and others permission to dream small. Small dreams can lead to big results. People can become paralyzed and overwhelmed with big dreams.

Jason Dorsey: #1 Trend that shapes generations: Parenting. All Baby Boomers who complain about Millenials have no one to blame but themselves. #2 Trend that shapes generations: Technology. Tech is only new to a person if they can remember the way things were before. The millennial generation is splitting into two. The Me-millennial and the Mega-millennial.

Danielle Strickland: Transformational leaders are like a tree. They pay attention to the fruit they are producing, especially the bitter fruit. Roots are deeply held beliefs. The trunk is the values. The Branches are the results. Be aware of the stages of transition: Normal – Unsettled – Chaos – New Unsettled – New Normal. We all need help to get through the chaos. The new normal can be worth (and necessary) to get to.

DeVon Franklin: Your Difference is your Destiny. The difference is defined as a way in which things are not the same. Destiny is your highest purpose and calling. It is a process, not a destination. Do not compromise who you are and try and fit in. That will not get you to your destiny. Own your differences. Be disciplined in your journey. Spend time with those who encourage your differences. Your difference makes a difference.

Patrick Lencioni: What is your motive to lead? There are only two types of leadership. Servant leadership (the right kind), and Reward-centered leadership (the wrong kind). Reward centered leaders do not do the things that are tedious, boring, or scary.

What a full day it has been. So much content to digest. And we still have Day 2 to come.
